 <발표 제목>: Variation and change in the three-way laryngeal contrast of Korean:  A comparative acoustic study of the Seoul and Kyungsang dialects

<발표 요지>: The current study investigated age variation in the acoustic cues to the three-way distinction among voiceless stops in Kyungsang Korean through the comparison with Seoul Korean. Although the increased influence of Seoul Korean to the regional variety questions whether the way to classify the stop consonants is similar between younger and older generations of Kyungsang speakers, the age factor has not yet been studied. This study addressed whether and how the stops in Kyungsang Korean are undergoing sound change through generational and dialectal comparisons. This study replicated previous findings and found several acoustic factors that suggest ongoing sound change in Kyungsang Korean. The result showed that the two generations of Kyungsang speakers showed a clear difference in using F0 for the stop distinction. The younger generations more use F0 than the older generation do for the stop distinction; but for the lexical pitch accent distinction the younger generations less use F0 than the older speakers do. This generational difference is also reflected in the use of VOT. The findings are discussed in a relation to the sound change in the pitch accent of Kyungsang Korean and the diachronic change in the stops of Seoul Korean.
