The fact that “purely” prosodic marking of focus may be weaker in some languages than in others, and that it varies in certain circumstances even within a single language, has not been commonly recognized. Therefore, this dissertation investigated whether and how purely prosodic marking of focus varies within and across languages. We conducted production and perception experiments using a paradigm of 10-digit phone-number strings in which the same material and discourse contexts were used in different languages.
The results demonstrated that prosodic marking of focus varied across languages. Speakers of American English, Mandarin Chinese, and Standard French clearly modulated duration, pitch, and intensity to indicate the position of corrective focus. Listeners of these languages recognized the focus position with high accuracy. Conversely, speakers of Seoul Korean, South Kyungsang Korean, Tokyo Japanese, and Suzhou Wu produced a weak and ambiguous modulation by focus, resulting in a poor identification performance.
This dissertation also revealed that prosodic marking of focus varied even within a single language. In Mandarin Chinese, a focused low/dipping tone (tone 3) received a relatively poor identification rate compared to other focused tones (about 77% vs. 91%). This lower identification performance was due to the smaller capacity of tone 3 for pitch range expansion and local dissimilatory effects around tone 3 focus. In Seoul Korean, prosodic marking of focus differed based on the tonal contrast (post-lexical low vs. high tones). The identification rate of high tones was twice as high than that of low tones (about 24% vs. 51%), the reason being that low tones had a smaller capacity for pitch range expansion than high tones.
All things considered, this dissertation demonstrates that prosodic focus is not always expressed by concomitant increased duration, pitch, and intensity. Accordingly, “purely” prosodic marking of focus is neither completely universal nor automatic, but rather is expressed through the prosodic structure of each language. Since the striking difference in focus-marking success does not seem to be determined by any previously-described typological feature, this must be regarded as an indicator of a new typological dimension, or as a function of a new typological space.

2015년도 2학기 실험음성학연구회를 예년과 마찬가지로 9월, 10월, 그리고 12월까지 매월 3번째주 토요일에 가질 예정입니다. 11월은 한국음성학회 국제학술대회로 인해 실험음성학연구회 모임을 가지지 않을 예정입니다. 오는 2학기에는 음성학으로 미국과 유럽에서 학위를 마치고 최근에 귀국하신 세 분의 박사님들을 초청하여 박사학위 논문으로 강독을 할 예정입니다. 그리고 겨울방학 중에는 지난 7월로 계획되었다가 메르스로 무산된 실험음성학 워크샵을 1박 2일로 준비할 예정입니다. 많은 관심과 참여를 바라겠습니다.

<발표제목>: Production and perception of Korean and English word-level prominence by Korean speakers
<개요>
Prominence refers to the relative emphasis that may be given to syllables in a word or words in a phrase. Korean has been claimed to have both word-level (Ko, 2013) and phrase-level (Jun, 1996) prominence. However, given that younger Korean speakers have lost duration as the main cue for expressing word-level prominence (Magen & Blumstein, 1993), it is not clear if and how younger Korean speakers produce or perceive word-level prominence. Thus, the first goal of this study is to examine how younger Korean speakers produce (Experiment 1) and perceive (Experiment 2) word-level prominence, if it exists. The second goal of the study is to investigate which L1 acoustic correlates/cues Korean learners use to produce (Experiment 3) and perceive (Experiment 4) English lexical stress, and whether they can acquire a cue that does not exist in their L1.
In Experiment 1, we found that duration and intensity systematically distinguish stress pairs for the older speakers at the phrase level, but not in isolated words. However, Experiment 2 revealed that, only in the first syllable, both older and younger Korean listeners weighted the duration cue most heavily. The findings of these two experiments suggest that that Korean does not have word-level prominence, but does have a phonemic vowel length distinction. When examining the production of English word-level prominence (Experiment 3) by Korean L2 learners of English, Korean listeners were able to use all suprasegmental cues (e.g., F0, duration, and intensity) in expressing English lexical stress, but failed to use segmental cues (e.g., vowel reduction). However, Experiment 4 revealed that, similar to native Englis h listeners, Korean learners weighted suprasegmental cues more heavily than suprasegmental cues in identifying English stress pairs. These results suggest that acquisition of L2 phonetic category is a prerequisite to accurate perception, as suggested by the Speech Learning Model (Flege, 1995).

회원 여러분께,
메르스 사태로 인해 이번 여름 워크샵은 잠정 연기하기로 하였습니다.
사태가 조기에 진정된다면 늦여름에 개최할 수도 있으며, 사태가 여름을 넘겨 진정된다면 겨울에 개최할 수도 있습니다.
현재 사태가 유동적인 만큼 사태의 추이를 지켜볼 예정이며 추후에 워크샵 관련 공지를 다시 하도록 하겠습니다.

<발표 제목>: Variation and change in the three-way laryngeal contrast of Korean: A comparative acoustic study of the Seoul and Kyungsang dialects
<발표자>: 이현정 (경남대학교)
<발표 요지>: The current study investigated age variation in the acoustic cues to the three-way distinction among voiceless stops in Kyungsang Korean through the comparison with Seoul Korean. Although the increased influence of Seoul Korean to the regional variety questions whether the way to classify the stop consonants is similar between younger and older generations of Kyungsang speakers, the age factor has not yet been studied. This study addressed whether and how the stops in Kyungsang Korean are undergoing sound change through generational and dialectal comparisons. This study replicated previous findings and found several acoustic factors that suggest ongoing sound change in Kyungsang Korean. The result showed that the two generations of Kyungsang speakers showed a clear difference in using F0for the stop distinction. The younger generations more use F0 than the older generation do for the stop distinction; but for the lexical pitch accent distinction the younger generations less use F0 than the older speakers do. This generational difference is also reflected in the use of VOT. The findings are discussed in a relation to the sound change in the pitch accent of Kyungsang Korean and the diachronic change in the stops of Seoul Korean.
